Why do marketing managers in the transitional economies of Eastern Europe and China often engage in competitively irrational behavior, choosing pricing strategies that damage competitors’ profits, rather than choosing pricing strategies that improve their firm’s profits? We propose one possible reason, the moral vacuum created by the collapse of communist ideology. We hypothesize and find that managers who experienced formal communist moral ideological indoctrination are less likely to be competitively irrational than the post-communist managers who did not. Implications are discussed.

Estamos en medio de una onda enorme de protestas, rechazos masivos y multitudinarios de las condiciones contemporáneas. El trabajo se pregunta qué significa decir NO en una sociedad que requiere de los pobres y miserables que subsidien el sistema financiero para mantener la ilusión de una riqueza abstracta. Este subsidio es necesario en la sociedad existente, para asegurar su riqueza y prevenir su implosión. La sociedad capitalista no puede combatirse de una formadirecta e inmediata - ¿qué significa realmente luchar contra (...) el dinero, resistir el movimiento de monedas, combatir el movimiento de tipos de interés, luchar contra los movimientos de precios, y resistir a la pobreza en un modo de reproducción social que conlleva la pobreza en su concepto de riqueza? El rechazo a aceptar las cosas tal y como son es enteramente negativo con respecto a las condiciones existentes de reproducción social. Demanda que su progreso continuo se ponga en suspenso. We investigate the underexplored question of when speakers make use of the omission phenomenon verb phrase ellipsis (VPE) in English given that the full form is also available to them. We base the interpretation of our results on the well-established information-theoretic Uniform Information Density (UID) hypothesis: Speakers tend to distribute processing effort uniformly across utterances and avoid regions of low information by omitting redundant material through, e.g., VPE. We investigate the length of the omittable VP and its predictability in context (...) as sources of redundancy which lead to larger or deeper regions of low information and an increased pressure to use ellipsis. We use both naturalness rating and self-paced reading studies in order to link naturalness patterns to potential processing difficulties. For the length effects our rating and reading results support a UID account. Surprisingly, we do not find an effect of the context on the naturalness and the processing of VPE. We suggest that our manipulation might have been too weak or not effective to evidence such an effect. (shrink)

Die wissenschaftliche Leitung und Letztverantwortung für den Band lag weiterhin bei N. Oikonomides, der nicht nur das Manuskript abschloss, sondern auch noch die Stellungnahmen der Begutachter auswerten konnte, Fahnen aber leider nicht mehr erleben durfte. Den größten Zeitaufwand investierte sicherlich J. Nesbitt, der ja für dieses Projekt in Dumbarton Oaks angestellt ist. E. McGeer dagegen ist zwar ein sigillographischer Hoffnungsträger in Amerika, (...) sein Beitrag zu diesem Band war aber noch eher bescheiden. (shrink)

Job crafting has been established as a bottom-up work design instrument for promoting health and well-being in the workplace. In recent years, the concepts of job crafting have been applied to the university student context, proving to be positively related to student well-being. Building on person-centered analyses from the employment context, we assessed approach study crafting strategy combinations and the relationships to students’ exhaustion, study engagement, and general well-being. Data from 2,882 German university students were examined, collected online during the (...) summer term in 2020. Using latent profile analysis, we found five distinct crafting groups, which showed discriminate validity with regard to emotional exhaustion, engagement, and well-being. The results underscore the positive role of study crafting for students’ health and well-being. They further indicate a less important role of increasing social resources for emotional exhaustion when combined with a moderate increase in structural resources and a moderate increase in challenging demands. Our findings imply that interventions to promote study crafting should be considered to promote student health and well-being. (shrink)

Prolonging working hours and presenteeism have been conceptualized as self-endangering coping behaviors in employees, which are related to health impairment. Drawing upon the self-regulation of behavior model, the goal achievement process, and Warr's vitamin model, we examined the antecedents and moderation effects regarding quantitative demands, autonomy, emotion regulation, and self-motivation competence of university students' self-endangering coping behaviors. Results from a cross-sectional survey of 3,546 German university students indicate that quantitative demands are positively related and autonomy has a u-shape connection with (...) self-endangering coping. Emotion regulation was shown to be a protective factor for prolonging working hours. Moreover, self-motivation moderated the relationship between quantitative demands and prolonging of working hours, but not in the assumed direction. Self-motivation showed a systematic positive relationship with prolonging of working hours, but no relationship with presenteeism. Autonomy moderated the relationship of quantitative demands with both self-endangering behaviors. We found no moderating effects for emotion regulation of quantitative demands or autonomy and self-endangering behaviors. Besides further practical implications, the results suggest that lecturers should design their courses accordingly with less time pressure and university students should be trained in the use of autonomy. Durch Zusammenstellung meiner Erfahrungen mochte ich ver­ suchen, an dem Prozef.\ einer erhohten Verantwortung differentiell mitzuwirken. Das Buch erscheint zum 10jiihrigen Jubiliium der Griin­ dung der Gesellschaft flir Verantwortung in der Wissenschaft (GVW) und nimmt die Erfahrungen dieser 10 Jahre mit auf. Der Mensch scheint zu Extremen zu neigen. Neben den im Prolog angedeuteten Gefahren wird unsere Gesellschaft yom Wege sinnge­ miif.\en Handelns heute auch von der entgegengesetzten Gefahr be­ droht: Aus Unkenntnis und Furcht vor der Undurchschaubarkeit der Naturwissenschaft und (...) Technik beide zu verbannen und das Heil wieder im emotionalen Denken zu suchen. Es erscheint mir daher notwendig, die Probleme auf breiterer Basis zu durchleuchten. 1m ersten Kapitel wird versucht, das Selbstverstiindnis der Wissen­ schaft zu diskutieren. Details mogen einige Leser etwas langweilen. Es wird daher am Ende jedes Kapitels eine Zusammenfassung ge­ geben, die erlauben sollte, jedes weitere Kapitel auch nach tiberschla­ gen eines Kapitels volliesen zu konnen. 1m zweiten Kapitel werden Motivierungen fUr das Studium und fUr die wissenschaftliche Arbeit zusammengestellt. Eine Meinungsum­ frage u~ter 8000 amerikanischen Studenten hat ergeben, daf.\ ca. 80% studieren, urn einen Sinn ihres Lebens zu finden. Diese Umfrage zeigt die Dringlichkeit der im zweiten Kapitel versuchten Diskussion. (shrink)

Aims: The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandi¬bular Disorders (RDC/TMD) Axis I diagnostic algorithms were demonstrated to be reliable but below target sensitivity and specificity. Empirical data supported Axis I algorithm revisions that were valid. Axis II instruments were shown to be both reliable and valid. An international consensus workshop was convened to obtain recommendations and finalization of new Axis I diagnostic algorithms and new Axis II instruments. Methods: A comprehensive search of published TMD diagnostic literature was followed by review and (...) consensus via a formal structured process by a panel of experts for revision of the RDC/TMD. Results: The recommended Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD) Axis I protocol includes both a valid screener for pain diagnoses and valid criteria for the most common pain-related TMDs and for one intra-articular disorder. The Axis II protocol retains selected RDC/TMD screening instruments augmented with new instruments to better assess the interactions between pain and psychosocial functioning. A comprehensive classification system is also presented. Conclusion: The recommended evidence-based DC/TMD protocol is appropriate for use in both the clinical and research settings. Simple Axis I and II screening tests augmented by validated Axis I and Axis II instruments allow for identification of simple to complex TMD patients. (shrink)

Neste texto, refero-me principalmente à forma madura da Ciência da Lógica, isto é, ao seu primeiro livro da edição revista do ano 1832. O objetivo de meu trabalho reside em demonstrar que a ilustração do problema do início da filosofia por Hegel é indiretamente uma chave para o entendimento da ideia fundamental de sua concepção da lógica como método científico da filosofia. Para atingir esse objetivo exponho, em primeiro lugar, as principais ideias do programa de Hegel por uma revisão da (...) lógica, da metafísica e da filosofia completa, em contraste à lógica tradicional. Depois ofereço uma interpretação da declaração da dificuldade em encontrar um início lógico na filosofia, que reside em que resolver o problema de unir o método ao conteúdo, a forma ao princípio. Essa interpretação deve mostrar no qual sentido o início vale sem pressuposto. Esse entendimento nega a possibilidade de começar a filosofia com algo hipotética e problematicamente verdadeiro como é o procedimento comum na matemática. Por meio da análise daquele problema ilustrado especialmente pelo exemplo da crítica hegeliana à compreensão da natureza da relação entre o ser puro e a sua alteração necessária em Jacobi, tento encontrar um acesso para o entendimento do método lógico de Hegel, na medida em que o momento da negatividade enquanto princípio do modo de determinar e, com isso, do conteúdo, resultam necessariamente da indeterminidade do ser como a mais pensável abstração. Esse resultado surge pela necessidade, por qual o ser puro provoca a sua própria mudança para o devir um desenvolvimento que Jacobi desmente por princípio para ficar parado na abstração unilateral e falsa. Assim, a indeterminidade enquanto algo contrário é mesmo o determinado ou o negativo, isto é, o negativo puro, inteiramente abstrato, em outras palavras: O ser como resultado da perfeita abstração é negatividade abstrata, o nada. Mas essa negatividade é o princípio e o método da determinação e do conhecer na lógica e na filosofia como ciência. (shrink)

Die Quantentheorie stellt eines der anspruchsvollsten und erfolgreichsten Theorieprojekte der Menschheitsgeschichte dar. Sie ist eine, wenn nicht die Universaltheorie der Physik. Die Geschichte ihrer Deutung und die Auseinandersetzung um ihre Interpretation berührt jedoch weitaus mehr als nur das Feld der theoretischen Physik. Eine solche Theorieanlage zerstört ontologische Gewissheiten. Sie stellt den Beobachter in Frage und sie lässt uns ahnen, was zu erwarten ist, wenn wir uns in anderen Feldern mit komplexen Phänomenen beschäftigen, die mit der Beobachterproblematik infiziert sind. Als transklassische (...) Physik ist die Quantentheorie gleichsam auf "Welten ohne Grund" gebaut und enttäuscht damit die Hoffnung, sich Sinnfragen durch die Physik oder Mathematik entledigen zu können. Homolog zu den Hochformen mystischer Reflexion kann uns die Auseinandersetzung um die Deutung der Quantenphysik allerdings eine Ahnung vermitteln, was das Geheimnis der konditionierten Koproduktion von System und Umwelt - Reflexion und Welt - für uns bedeuten kann, und uns möglicherweise dabei helfen, in Welten ohne Grund heimisch zu werden. Hierbei wird deutlich, dass hochgetriebene Theorie, die sich in ihren Abstraktionen in hohem Maße von der lebensweltlichen Wirklichkeit löst, nicht im Widerspruch zur Möglichkeit von Welterkenntnis steht. Im Gegenteil, erst ein hinreichend elaboriertes und mit eigenen, intern konditionierten Konsistenzzwängen ausgestattetes Theoriegebilde stellt die Bedingung zur Möglichkeit von Reflexion und Erkenntnisgewinnung dar. Der Austausch zwischen dem Autodidakten Grass und seinem »Lehrer« Celan hatte andererseits fundamentale Bedeutung für die Konzeption von Hundejahre als episches Korrelat zum Sprachkosmos des Lyrikers. The objective of this paper is to refute the widely held view that in the wake of his so-called reistic turn Brentano subjected his notion of intentionality to a deep-going revision, viz., that he turned from an ontological account of the intentional object by way of identifying it with the thought-of-thing, i.e., the intentional correlate, or by way of attributing to it a peculiar sort of existence, to a non-ontological account thereof. It will be shown that neither the pre-reistic Brentano (...) espoused anything of an ontological account of the intentional object in that he both distinguished it sharply from the intentional correlate and definitely rejected the idea of there being different sorts of existence, and it will be argued that the apparently ineradicable inclination to ascribe to the pre-reistic Brentano an ontological account of the intentional object stems from ignoring the Aristotelian background of Brentano's thinking about relations. The present account spans the history of arginine regulation from its discovery in 1955 until the present. In 1957 I demonstrated that not only added arginine but also internally produced arginine represses enzyme formation and that the potential for enzyme synthesis is in excess of what is required for growth. In 1959 I located the regulatory gene argR encoding the arginine repressor. An unusual feature of this research was the finding that in E. coli B, in contrast to E. coli (...) K12, arginine synthesis is permanently repressed, independent of arginine. This was due to a single amino acid difference between the two repressors. Recent studies showed that, in natural populations of E. coli, K12‐type regulation is much more frequent than B‐type regulation, and that E. coli B evolved from a strain with K12‐type regulation. In competition experiments, E. coli K12 was found to be favored in the presence of arginine and E. coli B in its absence, showing that contrary to expectations permanently turned off regulation is favored over negative regulation in some environments. En los estudios sobre el Caribe se ha vuelto un tópico común entender la región en términos de afrodescendencia y negritud. Con eso, se ha perfilado cierta tendencia de encerrar el espacio cultural tan diverso del Caribe y Centroamérica en una nueva concepción limitada y esencialista que hace abstracción de las múltiples y complejas convergencias transculturales a lo largo de su historia. Sin embargo, ya a partir de los años setenta y ochenta del siglo XX se han generado ensayos abarcadores (...) e innovadores en y desde el espacio caribeño mismo que introducen nuevas dimensiones en los debates sobre caribeñidad, antillanidad, mestizaje, ‘creolidad’ etc. En las literaturas caribeñas y centroamericanas han emergido numerosas obras que tematizan, ironizan y parodian la búsqueda de una identidad exclusivamente negra de los Caribes y de los intentos de regresar a la “Madre África”. El ensayo se dedica al análisis de este fenómeno en cuatro novelas de los Caribes francófono e hispanófono: Ti Jean l’horizon (1979) de Simone Schwarz-Bart (Guadalupe), Calypso (1996) de Tatiana Lobo (Costa Rica), Limón Blues (2002) de Anacristina Rossi (Costa Rica) y Black is black (2008) de Raphaël Confiant (Martinica). Among the most important aesthetic concepts – especially in the 18th century – are those of the beautiful and the sublime. Yet, in the various aesthetic theories these two concepts are employed in conjunction with one another in very different ways. There is one system in which the beautiful is the fundamental aesthetic value and the sublime i. e. the great – including grandeur and dignity – is only one of a number of defining characteristics of the beautiful. There is (...) another system in which the sublime is the highest degree of the beautiful i. e. of the extraordinary precious. The most influential systems are dichotomous classifications of the respective aesthetic qualities. These classifications themselves exhibit differences: The beautiful and the sublime oppose each other as loveliness creating affection on the one hand, and the astonishing-sublime creating a shudder on the other, but which in some cases can be blended with the beautiful. Alternatively, the concepts of the beautiful and the sublime are disjunctive in a way that they exclude each other: The beautiful is limited and gives positive pleasure; the sublime is unlimited, it depresses and uplifts the viewer at the same time and therefore gives a negative pleasure. – The concepts of the beautiful and the sublime are obviously characterized according to the system in which they appear. „Spiritualität heute“ – Unter diesem Titel hatte der Hildesheimer Literaturwissenschaftler Toni Tholen 2016 in einem Vortrag zum Nachdenken über Spiritualität angeregt und eingeladen. Er selbst verknüpfte dabei das Konzept der Selbstsorge mit dem Verständnis von literarischer Praxis als (eine zeitgemäße Form von) Spiritualität. Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus ganz unterschiedlichen Fachrichtungen der Universität Hildesheim haben die Einladung Tholens auf sehr verschiedene Weise angenommen. Sie verbindet die Haltung, offen für eine argumentative Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema (...) Spiritualität zu sein. Zugleich wählen sie in Inhalt und Form unterschiedliche Zugänge – so ist die Einladung zum Gespräch in doppeltem Sinne vielfältig aufgenommen. Einige Beiträge diskutieren die von Tholen vorlegte Konturierung von Spiritualität aus der Perspektive ihrer eigenen Disziplin. Andere fragen nach möglichen Einordnungen der Diskurse über Spiritualität. Wieder andere Beiträge erwägen die Frage, wie man die geistliche Suche mit wissenschaftlicher Suche verbinden kann. Mit der Antwort Tholens auf diese Texte entwickelt sich ein transdisziplinärer Dialog über das Thema Spiritualität. (shrink)

Interim measures are procedural means that allow persons or States to have their rights preserved when a case is pending. Application of these measures especially in environmental cases is very important. In many of these cases (e.g. cases dealing with territorial planning, IPPC permits, environmental impact assessment, etc.) the claims deal with the protection of environment or its components (water, air, soil, etc.) as well as with the protection of public interest. Legal regulation of application of interim measures provided by (...) Lithuanian Law on Administrative Proceedings is not optimal. That is why the first part of the article is dedicated to the analysis of the possibilities and problems of application of interim measures in the administrative proceedings in Lithuania, paying special attention to environmental cases. The second part of the article reflects the findings of a workshop of the Association of European Administrative Judges on „Interim relief in environmental matters” held in Vilnius on 22 September 2011. It briefly describes various national rules on interim relief procedures, especially in the German and the French legislation, with an assessment from the German point of view. This part of the article focuses on provisional legal protection where a permit is challenged by a third party whose rights are allegedly afflicted. In such a constellation the rights of the plaintiff compete with the rights of the operator. The article concludes that, when deciding on the necessity of interim measures, it is vital to ensure the balance of interests: both by ensuring effective access to justice and by protecting the respondent and the third party (in environmental cases - usually the operator) from the violation of their rights and the damage caused by the abuse of the right to request interim measures. In such cases short time limits for procedural steps both of the parties and the court are not advisable and a prima facie prognosis on the outcome in the main proceedings meets the interests of the parties.
